Ravna Monastery

Where early Bulgarian letters survive in stone

Medieval scribes left inscriptions and drawings carved into stone near Ravna, rare witnesses to the dawn of Bulgarian literacy.

An important literary centre of the 9th–11th centuries, near Ravna railway stop. The church was consecrated in 897. Finds are exhibited in Provadia Museum.
