STORIES ALONG THE WAY
Stone remembers more than it reveals.
Here, history is not behind a glass case — it lies beneath your feet, in the cliffs, and among the ruins of an ancient stronghold.
01 / OVECH FORTRESSHow a man without a crown reached the throne
Imagine Bulgaria at the end of the 13th century. Invasions ravage the land, people are weary, and the throne seems forever out of reach to anyone not born into nobility.
Then Ivaylo emerges — a man of humble origins who leads a revolt against Tatar raiders and eventually becomes ruler of Bulgaria. His story is associated with Ovech, a fortress defended by sheer cliffs.
Historical accounts link his campaigns to clashes with Byzantine forces in the region. Not every detail of these battles can be located or reconstructed with certainty. But a view from the fortress makes clear why control of these passages mattered so much.
02 / SHASHKANITEWho lived high in the cliffs?
Not every mystery here belongs to a battlefield. Ten stone chambers were cut into the cliffs above northern Provadia, some 30 metres above ground.
They are believed to be the remains of a medieval rock monastery, tentatively dated to the 12th–14th centuries. No surviving inscriptions clearly identify the people who lived here.
How did they reach their cells? Why choose such an inaccessible place? Sometimes the most compelling part of a journey lies in the questions the landscape leaves unanswered.
